Olwen Returns was commissioned for an exhibition (“Flourish” at the Moravian Gallery, Brno, The Czech Republic, 2005-06) but has since been shown in film festivals worldwide.
Initially shot on 16mm. film, the work has been transferred to DVD for display.
Olwen Returns features the artist in turn of the century costumes on location in her native South Wales and Yorkshire where she now lives. The work investigates how human emotions are depicted through forces of nature in film, making reference to ‘big themes’ from art history- the landscape; romanticism; beauty. There is no concrete story, instead the piece offers up endless clues for the audience to make their own narrative. For instance, the name in the title translates from Welsh as ‘Blessed Footprints’ and is also a heroine of the Welsh legend “The Mabinogion". The locations were chosen because of their over-familiarity, we are already aware of several sites through their use in small and large screen film productions.
