Ssh! was made specifically to be seen in a cinema (as part of a screening programme by HOST, at the Showroom, Sheffield, U.K. 2004). It has since been shown at a variety of locations in festivals both in the U.K. and abroad.
The piece was shot on super-8 film and transferred to DVD for display. It is available to purchase with 35 other artist’s works as HOST DVD 01.
Ssh! is a humorous short that makes direct reference to other films, notably Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940), Beckett’s 35mm Film and The Spiral Staircase by Siodmak (1945). As with much of the artist’s earlier work it explores the relationship between mother and daughter, and the gap created by the slippage between image and sound.
